INDIANAPOLIS ? A Canadian scientist has pleaded guilty to two charges that he sent U.S. trade secrets to China and Germany.
Kexue Huang (KEH'-shoo wang) pleaded guilty to economic espionage and to theft of trade secrets Tuesday in the U.S. District Court in Indianapolis. The 48-year-old faces a possible maximum prison sentence of 25 years.
The Chinese-born Huang was indicted in June 2010 and charged under the Economic Espionage Act of 1996 for allegedly passing along information on an organic pesticide developed by Dow AgroSciences in Indiana. A separate indictment unsealed Tuesday says he also stole information from Minnesota-based Cargill Inc.
Justice Department spokesman Tim Horty says Dow invested $300 million developing information allegedly stolen, but the plea agreement values the total losses from Huang's conduct at $7 million to $20 million.
