Bachmann not worried by 4th place Iowa poll finish

(AP) ? Michele Bachmann says she's not worried that a new Iowa poll puts her fourth among GOP presidential candidates.

But she won a straw poll in the state in August, was born in Iowa and is counting on a strong showing in the January caucuses.

Since the straw poll, the Minnesota congresswoman has struggled in the race, especially after Texas Gov. Rick Perry jumped in. Bachmann once led national public opinion polls, but got only 8 percent support in the new Iowa poll from the Des Moines Register.

Bachmann tells ABC's "This Week" that her campaign is "doing exactly what we need to do." She says she's campaigning heavily in Iowa and isn't worried about "day-to-day snapshots" of the race.

She's not saying whether Iowa is a must-win state.

(AP) ? The British monarch's first-born child, whether a girl or a boy, will ascend the throne under new succession rules approved Friday by Commonwealth nations, reversing centuries of tradition.

Commonwealth national leaders also agreed at a summit in the western Australian city of Perth to lift a ban on monarchs marrying Roman Catholics, British Prime Minister David Cameron said.

Britain or any of the 15 former British colonies for which Queen Elizabeth II is monarch could have vetoed the changes to current rules that ensure that a male heir takes the throne ahead of older sisters.

"Attitudes have changed fundamentally over the centuries and some of the outdated rules ? like some of the rules of succession ? just don't make sense to us any more," Cameron told reporters in Perth.

"The idea that a younger son should become monarch instead of an elder daughter simply because he is a man, or that a future monarch can marry someone of any faith except a Catholic ? this way of thinking is at odds with the modern countries that we have become," he added.

All 16 countries now have to begin their own legislative processes to enact the reforms. In Britain, that means passing and amending several pieces of legislation.

The complexity of getting all the countries to begin the processes has held up the changes for decades. Following Friday's announcement, New Zealand will chair a working group for the countries to discuss how to accomplish the reforms.

Cameron's announcement came on the first day of a biennial meeting of 53 Commonwealth leaders.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Australia's first female leader and chairwoman of the summit, welcomed the decision.

"These things seem straightforward, but just because they seem straightforward to our modern minds doesn't mean we should underestimate their historic significance," Gillard told reporters.

Elizabeth II is head of state of Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada, Belize, St. Christopher and Nevis, St. Lucia, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Papua New Guinea.

She opened the meeting of leaders representing 30 percent of the world's population on Friday by vowing to bring needed relevancy to the Commonwealth in a time of global uncertainty and insecurity.

The queen cited financial concerns, food supply insecurity and climate change among key issues she expected the forum to tackle.

"This Commonwealth meeting is, for its part, the perfect opportunity to address these issues and find responses for today's crises and challenges," she said in her opening address.

The queen also said the meeting would bring "new vibrancy" to the Commonwealth forum, which will be forced to defend itself against accusations of irrelevancy. A scathing report questioning its effectiveness will be presented to Commonwealth leaders during the summit.

Britain's government began the process of reviewing the rules of royal succession so that if Prince William's first child is a girl, she would eventually become queen. The review started before William married commoner Kate Middleton in April. She is now formally known as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

William is second in line to the throne after his father, Prince Charles, who is the queen's first-born child. Charles' sister Anne is lower in the line of succession than her younger brothers Andrew and Edward. Charles, in turn, had only sons, William and Harry.

Elizabeth II succeeded her father, King George VI, because he had no sons. If she had had a brother, however much younger he was, he would have jumped above her in the line of succession.

The thorny issue of the succession has been an on-and-off topic in Britain, but has never been resolved. In 2009, then Prime Minister Gordon Brown's government considered a bill that would end the custom of putting males ahead of females in the succession line, as well as lift a ban on British monarchs marrying Roman Catholics. The government did not have time to pursue it before Brown's term ended.

The rule has excluded women from succeeding to the throne in the past. Queen Victoria's first child was a daughter ? also called Victoria ? but it was her younger brother who succeeded to the throne, as King Edward VII.

Buckingham Palace has always refrained from commenting on the political issue, saying it's a matter for the government to decide.

Murdoch lawyer accused BBC of phone hacking vendetta (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? A lawyer for Rupert Murdoch's News Group Newspapers earlier this year accused the British Broadcasting Corporation of pursuing an investigation of alleged computer and phone hacking to "undermine" Murdoch's bid to acquire full ownership of satellite broadcaster BSkyB.

Julian Pike of the London law firm Farrer & Co, which also represents Britain's Queen Elizabeth, sent a series of letters last March to the BBC expressing concerns at the British arm of Murdoch's News Corporation that the BBC might have transgressed its commitment to impartiality for commercial or political reasons. The BBC denied this was the case.

The letters, whose full contents have not previously been reported, were sent in response to requests by journalists from the BBC newsmagazine Panorama to News Group for comment regarding alleged phone and computer hacking conducted by journalists for the Sunday tabloid News of the World.

Murdoch shut the paper last July amid a torrent of allegations about alleged ethical and legal lapses by its staff.

The Panorama program, headlined "Tabloid Hacks Exposed" focused on the alleged role of Murdoch journalists in employing "dark arts" - Fleet Street jargon for dubious and potentially illegal reporting tactics - and in particular allegations of "blagging" (jargon for pretending to be someone else) and computer and phone hacking at the News of the World.

Pike laid out News Group's complaints about the BBC's investigation in letters sent to Panorama in early March headed

"NOT FOR PUBLICATION & NOT FOR BROADCAST: STRICTLY PRIVATE & CONFIDENTIAL."

In two letters, dated March 10 and 11, Pike suggested that the BBC might be pursuing the hacking story for business or political reasons rather than for journalistic motives.

Pike said that BBC Director General Mark Thompson had been "required to apologize" in November 2010 for adding his signature to a letter from a group of companies who were critical of News Corp's bid to acquire the balance of shares in BSkyB which it did not already own.

In his March 10 letter, Pike noted that the BBC was planning to broadcast Panorama's investigation at a time when the British government was actively considering Murdoch's bid for BSkyB's remaining shares. He noted that the BBC had an "obligation to avoid embroiling itself in a political and commercial battle that it should have nothing to do with."

BSkyB is a principal competitor with the BBC in Britain.

In a lengthy letter sent to the BBC the following day, Pike said it had "not gone unnoticed" that the BBC, along with "certain other media organizations," had been in "the vanguard of running a campaign against" News Corp regarding alleged News of the World phone hacking. Pike asserted that the BBC had "obvious political and commercial reasons" to use the phone hacking allegations "to attack our clients and undermine New (sic) Corp's Sky bid."

Pike said it was "quite apparent" that the program the BBC was preparing was "yet another attempt to undermine New Corp's bid for Sky" (sic).

In the letter, Pike also accused the BBC of planning to take out of context an investigation by Britain's Information Commissioner's Office which alleged that publications other than the News of the World, including The Observer, a Sunday newspaper which is affiliated with the Guardian daily, had also engaged in questionable or illegal reporting practices.

In response to a request for comment, the BBC told Reuters: "Panorama investigations always come from a point of public interest and operate within the BBC editorial guidelines and Ofcom's code. This program was no different and...details of the phone hacking scandal has been widely reported by numerous media organizations. Any suggestion it was made to further the BBC's own interests is utterly without foundation."

A spokesperson for News International, Murdoch's principal newspaper publishing company in Britain, said the company had no comment on Pike's accusation that the BBC had pursued the phone hacking inquiry for ulterior motives.

However, the spokesperson noted that the company on October 14 had issued a statement acknowledging that its Management and Standards committee, supervising News International's response to the phone hacking controversy, had agreed with Farrer & Co. that the law firm would "stand down" from representing Murdoch's News Group properties in "current or future" lawsuits filed by alleged News of the World phone hacking victims.

At a hearing before a British parliamentary committee which has been investigating phone hacking, Pike acknowledged that in 2008 he became aware of documentary evidence contradicting public statements by Murdoch aides that phone hacking at the News of the World had been the work of a "single rogue reporter."

Pike told the committee he did not believe he had an obligation as a lawyer "to go and report something that I see within a case where there might have been some criminal activity."

In a report on his testimony and other aspects of his letters to the BBC, the Guardian last week reported that Pike had admitted to parliament that he knew public statements by News of the World executives about the rogue reporter were misleading when he sent a letter to the BBC threatening "successful" litigation for defamation if the BBC accused News International executives of knowingly making untrue or misleading public statements.

The Guardian also reported that the BBC had referred Farrer & Co to a disciplinary authority for British lawyers because of this aspect of Pike's letter.

The BBC confirmed that it had "written to the Solicitors Regulation Authority. seeking advice in relation to their rules governing the conduct of solicitors."

In Britain, solicitors are lawyers who handle most out of court and pre-trial litigation, while barristers are lawyers who handle trials and appeal proceedings in higher courts.

Pike did not respond to an e-mail requesting comment. But a representative of Farrer & Co. disputed the Guardian's interpretation of Pike's letter and what Pike had said to Parliament. The firm had no further comment on its accusation that the BBC had acted for commercial or political motives.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority said that in July, it had launched a "formal investigation into the role of solicitors in events surrounding the News of the World phone hacking crisis," and that it could make no further comment while that inquiry was under way.

Obama's appearance on Leno: a sneak peek (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? President Obama told Jay Leno during his visit to the "Tonight Show" that "you never like to see anybody come to the kind of end" that Muammar Gaddafi did, but that his death sends a message to other dictators.

Obama also said he isn't paying much attention to the GOP debates this early in the election cycle, according to a transcript of the appearance provided by NBC. He also chatted with Leno about Republican opposition to the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, and about what Michelle Obama is giving trick-or-treaters for Halloween.

"I'm going to wait until everybody is voted off the island before --" he joked about the GOP race, trailing off before finishing the thought. "Once they narrow it down to one or two, I'll start paying attention."

Asked about the Libyan dictator's death last week, Obama told Leno:

"Well, this is somebody who, for 40 years, has terrorized his country and supported terrorism. And he had an opportunity during the Arab spring to finally let loose of his grip on power and to peacefully transition into democracy.

"We gave him ample opportunity, and he wouldn't do it. And, obviously, you never like to see anybody come to the kind of end that he did, but I think it obviously sends a strong message around the world to dictators that... people long to be free, and they need to respect the human rights and the universal aspirations of people."

Video of the bloodied dictator being dragged away -- and later shots of his corpse being surrounded by crowds -- appeared worldwide last week.

No fighting with crazy on 'Real Housewives'

Richard Mclaren / Bravo

The ladies of "Beverly Hills" at their leisure: Kim Richards, Taylor Armstrong, Lisa Vanderpump, Kyle Richards, Adrienne Maloof and Camille Grammer.

By Lia Haberman, E! Online

Has Bravo been taking our notes?

Tonight's episode of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" finally reached its bling potential with an Arabian Nights party in the works, a swanky at-home spa party with top of the line treatments and gold dust sprinkled on the desserts.

But one Housewife wasn't ready to give up her domestic dreams just yet and, of course, there had to be more conflict between Kim and Kyle Richards and Brandi Glanville, even as two of them tried to bury the hatchet...

MORE: "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" Recap: "We're All Trailer Park Compared to You"

If Lisa Vanderpump gives her I'm-just-a-simple-English-girl-routine one more time, we may have to revoke her 90210 resident status. Cooking lessons for Adrienne Maloof? No wonder Chef Bernie was smirking in the background. (Somebody please give this snarky hired help his own series.)

And acting all jealous of Adrienne's over-the-top spa? "I would love to have a spray tan booth in my house," says Villa Blanca's poor little rich girl. Puh-lease. She lives right across the street in the same gated community. They probably guarantee this type of amenity in the homeowners-association contract.

RELATED: Taylor Armstrong on Russell's Abuse: "Real Housewives" May Have Saved My Life

Give us more of Mohamed's 60,000 square-foot mansion and his don't-speak-until-you're-spoken-to twinkie, Julia. The man wants to throw Pandora a surprise engagement party with camels, belly dancers and secret sex rooms. Bring it!

Adrienne has three fridges in her kitchen, can't find the salt and pepper and uses dish soap to wash away salmonella bacteria on her roasting chicken. Yes! That's exactly what we expect of our Bev Hills millionaires. Not modesty.?

MORE: "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" Recap: Kyle and Kim Richards Tag-Team Their Mean Girl Routine

So Adrienne owns a $40,000 hydrating facial machine, among many other treatment options. We want to see more!

The alternative is watching endless negotiations where everyone tries to get Brandi to apologize for the game-night nuttiness. But she's not going there, at least with Kim:

"I don't think she's ready to have a discussion about anything to do with drugs or being inebriated that night. But she clearly has a problem, and you can't fight with crazy."

RELATED: "Real Housewives'" Camille Grammer: Ex-Husband Kelsey Is Being "Mean and Disrespectful"

(Well, you can fight with crazy but it never ends well.)

But Kyle seems to be finally starting to come around (and maybe even show a tiny bit of remorse for her role in the whole mess). So a half-hearted truce with Brandi is declared, during which Kyle has to pretend she doesn't even know what "that stuff" is called. "Crystal ... methadone?"

(Call it a wild guess, but "Breaking Bad" probably isn't on her and Mauricio's DVR lineup.)

MORE: "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" Recap: "I'm Not a Super Slut"

"Not cool, what a traitor," huffs Kim at her sister's peace-making powwow with Brandi. In fact, the woman who coined "slut pig" isn't feeling the least bit forgiving.?

?PHOTOS: Before They Were "Housewives"

"Dirty, dirty, ugly mouth. Like a sewer," says Kim to describe the former Mrs. Eddie Cibrian.

Do you think Brandi's crystal meth accusations were beyond reproach? What about all the excess on display? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

US-North Korea nuclear talks start in Geneva (AP)

GENEVA ? U.S. and North Korean diplomats began talks Monday on Pyongyang's nuclear program, the second direct encounter between the two sides in less than three months.

Mobbed by reporters as they left their lakeside hotel for a first meeting at the United States' U.N. mission in Geneva, American diplomats declined to reveal their goals for the two-day talks.

Stephen Bosworth, the U.S. top envoy on Pyongyang, said the two sides hadn't met Sunday despite staying ? by design or coincidence ? in the same hotel. He was accompanied by Glyn Davies, the U.S. ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency, who is taking over the negotiating brief in future talks.

Their opposite on North Korea's delegation is First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan.

The parties met for two hours in the morning before breaking to have lunch separately. A statement was expected early evening summing up the day's talks, and diplomats are scheduled to reconvene at North Korea's mission on Tuesday.

U.S. diplomats have previously said they want North Korea to adhere to a 2005 agreement it reneged on requiring verifiable denuclearization in exchange for better relations with its Asian neighbors.

North Korea's closest ally China urged Pyongyang to improve its strained ties with United States and South Korea, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported Monday.

Beijing wants to revive the stalled six-nation disarmament negotiations, which also include South Korea, Japan and Russia. North Korea walked out on the talks in 2009 ? and exploded a second nuclear-test device ? but now wants to re-engage. Last year Pyongyang was also blamed for two military attacks on South Korea that heightened tensions on the peninsula.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta lashed out at North Korea on Monday for "reckless and provocative" acts, in an opinion piece published by Japan's Yomiuri newspaper.

He wrote that Washington and Tokyo share common challenges in the Asia-Pacific. "These include North Korea, which continues to engage in reckless and provocative behavior and is developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, which pose a threat not just to Japan but to the entire region," he said.

Separately, the U.N.'s top relief official said Monday that the nuclear talks in Switzerland should avoid discussing humanitarian assistance to the chronically hungry Asian country.

Valerie Amos, who visited North Korea last week for 5 days, said it was "not appropriate" for the two sides to discuss humanitarian aid which "must be kept separate from a political agenda."

The U.N. is calling on countries to provide $218 million in emergency aid to North Korea.

Jets' Tomlinson becomes 4th RB with 600 catches (AP)

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ? LaDainian Tomlinson has become the fourth running back in NFL history to catch 600 passes, reaching the milestone midway through the first quarter of the New York Jets' game against the San Diego Chargers.

Tomlinson, sixth on the NFL's career rushing list, joins Larry Centers (827), Marshall Faulk (767) and Keith Byars (610) as running backs with 600 or more receptions. He got No. 600 on a 6-yard shovel pass from Mark Sanchez on third-and-7 from the Chargers 22. The Jets kicked a field goal on the next play to cut the deficit to 7-3.

Tomlinson, playing for the first time against the team he spent his first nine seasons, entered the game needing a touchdown vs. San Diego to join Terrell Owens as the only players to score against all 32 NFL teams.

(AP) ? FIFA President Sepp Blatter promised Friday to release the files from a 10-year-old corruption scandal that could name senior officials who took millions of dollars in kickbacks.

FIFA has previously stopped a Swiss court from releasing documents identifying who received payments from the former ISL marketing agency, which collapsed in 2001.

On Friday, Blatter said his executive committee ? including members implicated in the case ? will reopen the ISL dossier at a Dec. 16-17 meeting in Tokyo.

"We will give this file to an independent organization outside of FIFA so they can delve into this file and extract its conclusions and present them to us," Blatter said after a two-day session of his executive panel.

Dealing with the ISL allegations became a test of Blatter's promised willingness to reform FIFA and world soccer after a slew of scandals involving bribery, vote-rigging and ticket scams.

Blatter announced an overhaul Friday of FIFA's investigative and legal structures that he expects will take two years to complete ? defining his fourth and final presidential term.

Three new task forces will report to Blatter's previously announced "solutions committee," which aims to promote good governance. Up to 18 members, drawn from politics and soccer, will be announced in Tokyo, but will not include former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger as previously suggested by Blatter.

"I think we have been ambitious in our road map," Blatter said, insisting FIFA as an institution is "not corrupt."

Pressure to act built after four members of Blatter's high command, including three continental presidents, were implicated in corruption scandals and banned or resigned in the past year. FIFA banned his former election rival Mohamed bin Hammam for life for allegedly bribing voters.

One task force announced Friday will create a two-chamber ethics court with separate, independent investigation and prosecution units. It will be led by Swiss ethics committee chairman Claudio Sulser.

German executive committee member Theo Zwanziger will steer proposed reforms of FIFA's statute book.

A transparency task force will examine how FIFA should run the bidding for future World Cups after 2018 host Russia and 2022 host Qatar won contests last year that were surrounded by recriminations.

The panel, chaired by Frank van Hattum of New Zealand and Paraguay's Juan Angel Napout, will write a code of conduct for officials, consider how FIFA vets committee members and include clubs, leagues and players in decision making.

A soccer task force for on-field issues is already headed by former West Germany great Franz Beckenbauer.

The working groups will start making proposals in December and present plans for approval at the next two FIFA annual congresses of 208 nations.

Regarding the marketing scandal, Blatter acted on extensive advice from Transparency International, a global anti-corruption watchdog that typically works with governments and corporations.

Sylvia Schenk, TI's sports adviser who pushed Blatter to confront the lingering ISL problem, said she was satisfied with his commitment to change.

"I think they can deliver. It will be a catastrophe if they go back (on their promises)," Schenk said after watching Blatter's news conference.

Blatter said his committee members were relaxed about reviving "this famous ISL case."

"We are happy because we are moving forward," he said. "Before the end of the year a big chunk of the concerns we had in the past ... will be set behind us."

Six ISL executives stood trial in Switzerland in 2008 charged with financial misdeeds over the agency's collapse with debt of $300 million. The bankruptcy jeopardized FIFA's finances and left it scrambling to find new buyers for World Cup television and marketing rights.

The criminal court heard that ISL paid $100 million in kickbacks to sports officials, although commercial bribery was not then a crime in Switzerland. FIFA executive committee member Nicolas Leoz of Paraguay was named in court as receiving $130,000 in payments.

In 2010, FIFA reported that two senior soccer officials repaid kickbacks worth $7 million on condition of anonymity. FIFA has blocked the court in Zug from identifying them.

British broadcaster the BBC has reported that court documents name Blatter's predecessor Joao Havelange of Brazil and Ricardo Teixeira, Havelange's former son-in-law. Teixeira is an executive committee member and heads the 2014 Brazil World Cup organizing team.

Africa's soccer president Issa Hayatou, of Cameroon, also has been identified as taking ISL payments of around $20,000, which he said were for his confederation.

Havelange and Hayatou, both IOC members, are being investigated by the Olympic body's ethics commission using the BBC's evidence.

The governance group co-ordinating the reforms as a "watchdog" appears unlikely to include opera singer Placido Domingo, who was suggested by Blatter in June.

"I have to apologize for having named all those people," the FIFA leader said.

In other decisions Friday, Blatter's executive committee extended a ban on Kosovo playing international exhibitions until it gets United Nations recognition.

In Bosnia-Herzegovina, FIFA extended the mandate of an emergency management team running the soccer body there for more than one year through 2012.

FIFA will choose officials to run Syrian soccer until new executive elections by Dec. 11.

Jobs refused early surgery for cancer: biographer (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Apple Inc co-founder Steve Jobs refused potentially life-saving cancer surgery for nine months, shrugging off protests from his family and opting instead for alternative medicine, according to the tech visionary's biographer.

When Jobs eventually sought surgery, the rare form of pancreatic cancer had spread to the tissues surrounding the organ, biographer Walter Isaacson said in an interview with "60 Minutes" on CBS, to be aired on Sunday.

Jobs also played down the seriousness of his condition and told everyone he was cured but kept receiving treatment in secret, Isaacson said in the interview, excerpts of which CBS released on Thursday.

Isaacson confirmed details that had previously been speculated upon or widely reported, including that Jobs might have been cured of his "slow-growing" cancer had he sought professional treatment sooner, rather than resorting to unconventional means.

"He tries to treat it with diet. He goes to spiritualists. He goes to various ways of doing it macrobiotically and he doesn't get an operation," Isaacson said in the interview.

Jobs deeply regretted putting off a decision that might have ultimately saved his life, according to Isaacson.

"I think that he kind of felt that if you ignore something, if you don't want something to exist, you can have magical thinking .... We talked about this a lot," he said.

The biographer did not specify which surgical procedure he was referring to in his interview ahead of the October 24 release of the biography.

Jobs announced in August 2004 that he had undergone surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his pancreas. In 2008 and 2009 -- as his dwindling weight stirred increasing alarm in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street -- he said first he was fighting a "common bug," then that he was suffering from a hormone imbalance.

In 2009, news emerged that he had undergone a liver transplant.

Scientist pleads guilty to stealing trade secrets (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? A Canadian scientist has pleaded guilty to two charges that he sent U.S. trade secrets to China and Germany.

Kexue Huang (KEH'-shoo wang) pleaded guilty to economic espionage and to theft of trade secrets Tuesday in the U.S. District Court in Indianapolis. The 48-year-old faces a possible maximum prison sentence of 25 years.

The Chinese-born Huang was indicted in June 2010 and charged under the Economic Espionage Act of 1996 for allegedly passing along information on an organic pesticide developed by Dow AgroSciences in Indiana. A separate indictment unsealed Tuesday says he also stole information from Minnesota-based Cargill Inc.

Justice Department spokesman Tim Horty says Dow invested $300 million developing information allegedly stolen, but the plea agreement values the total losses from Huang's conduct at $7 million to $20 million.

Occupy Wall Street reaches 1-month birthday (AP)

NEW YORK ? The month-old Occupy Wall Street movement continues to grow, with nearly $300,000 in the bank and participants finding satisfaction in the widening impact they hope will counter the influence on society by those who hold the purse strings of the world's economies.

The expanding occupation of land once limited to a small Manhattan park in the shadow of the rising World Trade Center complex continued through the weekend, with hundreds of thousands of people rallying around the world and numerous encampments springing up in cities large and small.

For the most part, the protest action remained loosely organized and there were no specific demands, something Legba Carrefour, a participant in the Occupy D.C. protest, found comforting on Sunday.

"When movements come up with specific demands, they cease to be movements and transform into political campaign rallies," said Carrefour, who works as a coat check attendant despite holding a master's degree in cultural studies. "It's compelling a lot of people to come out for their own reasons rather than the reasons that someone else has given to them."

The demonstrations worldwide have emboldened those camped out at Manhattan's Zuccotti Park, the epicenter of the movement that began a month ago Monday. But there is conflict too. Some protesters eventually want the movement to rally around a goal, while others insist that isn't the point.

"We're moving fast, without a hierarchical structure and lots of gears turning," said Justin Strekal, a college student and political organizer who traveled from Cleveland to New York to help. "... Egos are clashing, but this is participatory democracy in a little park."

Even if the protesters were barred from camping in Zuccotti Park, as the property owner and the city briefly threatened to do last week, the movement would continue, Strekal said.

Wall Street protesters are intent on building on momentum gained from Saturday's worldwide demonstrations, which drew hundreds of thousands of people, mostly in the U.S. and Europe.

Nearly $300,000 in cash has been donated through the movement's website and by visitors to the park, said Bill Dobbs, a press liaison for Occupy Wall Street. The movement has an account at Amalgamated Bank, which bills itself as "the only 100 percent union-owned bank in the United States."

Donated goods ranging from blankets and sleeping bags to cans of food and medical and hygienic supplies are being stored in a cavernous space donated by the United Federation of Teachers, which has offices in the building a block from Wall Street near the private park protesters occupy.

Among the items are 20 pairs of swimming goggles (to shield protesters from pepper-spray attacks). Supporters are shipping about 300 boxes a day, many with notes and letters, Strekal said.

"Some are heartwrenching, beautiful," and come from people who have lost jobs and houses, he said. "So they send what they can, even if it's small."

Strekal said donated goods, stored for a "long-term occupation," have been used to create "Jail Support" kits consisting of a blanket, a granola bar and sanitary wipes for arrested protesters to receive when they are freed.

The movement has become an issue in the Republican presidential primary race and beyond, with politicians from both parties under pressure to weigh in.

President Barack Obama referred to the protests at Sunday's dedication of a monument for Martin Luther King Jr., saying the civil rights leader "would want us to challenge the excesses of Wall Street without demonizing those who work there."

Many of the largest of Saturday's protests were in Europe, where those involved in long-running demonstrations against austerity measures declared common cause with the Occupy Wall Street movement. In Rome, hundreds of rioters infiltrated a march by tens of thousands of demonstrators, causing what the mayor estimated was at least euro1 million ($1.4 million) in damage to city property.

U.S. cities large and small were "occupied" over the weekend: Washington, D.C., Fairbanks, Alaska, Burlington, Vt., Rapid City, S.D., and Cheyenne, Wyo. were just a few. In Cincinnati, protesters were even invited to take pictures with a couple getting married; the bride and groom are Occupied Cincinnati supporters.

More than 70 New York protesters were arrested Saturday, more than 40 of them in Times Square. About 175 people were arrested in Chicago after they refused to leave a park where they were camped late Saturday, and there were about 100 arrests in Arizona ? 53 in Tucson and 46 in Phoenix ? after protesters refused police orders to disperse. About two dozen people were arrested in Denver, and in Sacramento, Calif., anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan was among about 20 people arrested after failing to follow police orders to disperse.

Activists around the country said Saturday's protests energized their movement.

"It's an upward trajectory," said John St. Lawrence, a Florida real estate lawyer who took part in Saturday's Occupy Orlando protest, which drew more than 1,500 people. "It's catching people's imagination and also, knock on wood, nothing sort of negative or discrediting has happened."

St. Lawrence is among those unconcerned that the movement has not rallied around any particular proposal.

"I don't think the underlying theme is a mystery," he said. "We saw what the banks and financial institutions did to the economy. We bailed them out. And then they went about evicting people from their homes," he said.

In Richmond, Va., about 75 people gathered Sunday for one of the "general assembly" meetings that are a key part of the movement's consensus-building process. Protester Whitney Whiting, a video editor, said the process has helped "gather voices" about Americans' discontent.

"In regards to a singular issue or a singular focus, I think that will come eventually. But right now we have to set up a space for that to happen," Whiting said.

Some U.S. protesters, like those in Europe, have their own causes. Unions that have joined forces with the movement have demands of their own, and on Sunday members of the newly formed Occupy Pittsburgh group demanded that Bank of New York Mellon Corp. pay back money they allege it overcharged public pension funds around the country.

New York's attorney general and New York City sued BNY Mellon this month, accusing it of defrauding clients in foreign currency exchange transactions that generated nearly $2 billion over 10 years. The company has vowed to fight the lawsuit and had no comment about the protesters' allegation about pensions.

Lisa Deaton, a tea party leader from southern Indiana, said she sees similarities between how the tea party movement and the Wall Street protests began: "We got up and we wanted to vent."

But the critical step, she said, was taking that emotion and focusing it toward changing government.

The first rally she organized drew more than 2,500 people, but afterward, "it was like, `What do we do?'" she said. "You can't have a concert every weekend."

Low-rated 'Charlie's Angels' grounded by ABC

ABC says its revamped version of the 1970s hit "Charlie's Angels" is being shut down after only four airings because of low ratings.

The network said Friday that four more episodes remain to be aired. The action series focused on three female detectives in Miami.

But the reboot has struggled in the ratings since its premiere last month. It's ABC's first cancellation of the new fall season.

The original "Charlie's Angels" aired for six seasons on ABC and launched one of its angels, Farrah Fawcett, as a major star. More recently, two feature films were also produced.

G-20 to consider IMF resources (AP)

PARIS ? The finance chiefs of the Group of 20 rich and developing nations said Saturday that they will make sure the International Monetary Fund has the resources it needs to help stabilize the world economy.

That commitment is a hint that the world's leading economies may be open to a larger role of the IMF in the eurozone debt crisis ? and if necessary increase its resources.

"We committed that the IMF must have adequate resources to fulfill its systemic responsibilities," finance ministers and central bank chiefs from the G-20 said in a statement after a two-day meeting in Paris.

They said they would discuss the question of IMF funding at a summit of G-20 leaders in Cannes, France, in early November.

Earlier in the day, officials said several countries, including the U.S., were still resisting an increase in the IMF's resources.

As the debt troubles in the eurozone threaten to spin out of control ? with potentially global consequences ? France and some other countries have pushed for the IMF to help Europe keep the crisis from spreading to large economies such as Italy and Spain.

Until now, the IMF has funded about a third of the bailouts of Greece, Ireland and Portugal, but helping the eurozone to stem contagion would require a broader use of resources, such as buying bonds on the open market, that go far beyond the fund's traditional role of providing rescue loans to cash-strapped countries.

A precondition to any expansion of the IMF's role is for the eurozone to take more radical action on stemming the crisis at a summit on Oct. 23.

At that meeting in Brussels, the currency union's leaders are expected to sign off on a scheme to maximize the impact of their euro440 billion ($608 billion) bailout fund, a plan to recapitalize banks across the continent to ensure they can withstand worsening market turmoil and a second bailout for Greece.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner still seemed hesitant on giving more money to the IMF, he appeared to support an expanded role for the fund.

"The members of the G-20 have a strong interest in supporting Europe, and we will continue to do so through the IMF," Geithner said. However, he stressed that the fund "has a substantial arsenal of financial resources," adding that the U.S. supported further use of "those existing resources" alongside boosted European efforts.

Herman Cain Denies 'SimCity' Influence On His '999' Plan (VIDEO)

WASHINGTON -- On Friday, Herman Cain responded to The Huffington Post's analysis of the similarities between his "999" economic plan and the default tax rate in "SimCity 4," saying he did not get the idea from the video game.

In a video aired Friday night on "The Rachel Maddow Show," a reporter asked Cain whether he had spent some time in the world of arcologies and flying lizards. "You said you had original ideas, successful people around you thinking ideas up," the reporter said while questioning Cain about the "999" plan. "Is it an original idea or modeled after a game?"

"It's an original idea, and for people to say it's modeled after a game -- it's a lie," Cain said during a campaign stop in Tennessee. "That's all I'm going to say. It is a lie. You see, that's the difference when you become one or two in the polls. People make up stuff. That is a lie. I'm not going to take it back and not going to politically say -- but unfortunately that is not totally true. It's a lie."

When asked for comment for the earlier report, Cain campaign spokesman JD Gordon replied, "Well, we all like '9-9-9.'"

In "SimCity 4," the default tax rate is 9 percent for commercial taxes, 9 percent for residential taxes and 9 percent for industrial taxes. In Herman Cain's America, the corporate income tax rate would be 9 percent, the personal income tax rate would be 9 percent and the national sales tax rate would be 9 percent.

Kip Katsarelis, a senior producer for Maxis, the company that created the 'SimCity' series, was excited that politicians may be looking to video games for ideas.

"We encourage politicians to continue to look to innovative games like SimCity for inspiration for social and economic change," said Katsarelis. "While we at Maxis and Electronic Arts do not endorse any political candidates or their platforms, it's interesting to see GOP candidate Herman Cain propose a simplified tax system like one we designed for the video game SimCity 4."

In the game, Katsarelis said, the hope was that a simpler tax code would enable a greater focus on infrastructure and national security. "Our game design team thought that an easy-to-understand taxation system would allow players to focus on building their cities and have fun thwarting giant lizard attacks, rather than be buried by overly complex financial systems."

On Friday night, Maddow quipped that Cain's denial of the "SimCity" influence was "giving up the opportunity to cultivate the aging but enthusiastic urban-planning video game market."
